The present study examines and comparatively analyzes the perspectives of Murtaḍā Muṭahharī concerning change in religious knowledge and the dynamism of religion. Drawing upon the philosophy of the primacy of existence (aṣālat al-wujūd) and Sadrian trans-substantial motion (al-ḥarakat al-jawhariyya), Muṭahharī maintains that religion, as a divine truth, is immutable; however, human religious knowledge undergoes transformation under the influence of the exigencies of time and space. In contrast to certain Muslim modernist thinkers such as Soroush, Abu Zayd, and Arkoun, he does not consider this change to be merely a byproduct of social conditions; rather, he attributes it to the inherent dynamism and internal capacities of religion itself.
In the present study, the definitions of religion and religious knowledge are first examined; subsequently, Muṭahharī’s perspectives are analyzed in light of Islamic philosophy. Muṭahharī posits two distinct dimensions for religion: the immutable (thābit) and the mutable (mutaghayyir). In other words, while acknowledging change within religious knowledge, he concurrently maintains a form of inherent dynamism within religion itself, contingent upon the premise that this dynamism emanates from within—grounded in the structural framework of the religion—rather than being an external imposition. By elucidating the principle of normative conflict (qāʿidat al-tazāḥum), secondary precepts (al-ʿanāwīn al-thānawiyya), and the prerogatives of the Islamic ruler (ikhtiyārāt al-ḥākim), he demonstrates that religion possesses the capacity for adaptation to changing circumstances while rigorously preserving its fundamental principles. This study briefly explores the points of convergence and divergence between Muṭahharī’s perspective and those of the aforementioned modernist thinkers. It ultimately reveals that Muṭahharī’s approach to change, while inherently dynamic, adheres strictly to defined parameters that preclude the distortion or alteration of the very essence of religion.
