The technical mastery of the sage Āqā ʿAlī Mudarris in the articulation of Tawḥīd is evident in two seminal works in the history of Islamic philosophy, namely Badāyiʿ al-Ḥikam and Risāla fī al-Tawḥīd. From his perspective, the elucidation of theoretical and practical Tawḥīd constitutes one of the most formidable theological issues. Consequently, he endeavors to ground monotheistic belief upon a foundational epistemology, providing a rigorously argued and robust formulation in expressing the principles culminating in Tawḥīd and offering a reasoned explication of its hierarchical degrees. The articulation of ontological principles and the traversing of the degrees of unity—from general unity (waḥdat ʿāmmiyya) to specific unity (waḥdat khāṣṣiyya), and ultimately to the most specific unity (waḥdat akhaṣṣiyya)—signify the structured progression that he considers imperative for the intellectual journey toward the personal unity of existence (tawḥīd-i shakhṣī-yi wujūd). Furthermore, his methodical writing illustrates the continuity of the philosophical discourse and the dynamism of rational inquiry during that era. A thematic and substantive analysis of these two treatises, alongside an observation of the sage’s robust positions on the issue of Tawḥīd, reveals the precision and rigor of transcendent intellection concerning the most pivotal tenet of faith. Consequently, this yields the theoretical dividends of monotheism in the accurate explication of scriptural texts.
