One of the fundamental concepts in the discourse of modern atheism is the hypothesis of chance regarding the genesis of the cosmos. This hypothesis has engendered diverse theoretical perspectives within the domains of physics and biology. Among the most significant formulations of this hypothesis are Darwin’s “evolution of species,” the Mendelian “principle of inheritance,” Dawkins’s “genetic mutation,” and Heisenberg’s “uncertainty principle.” In its biological formulation, chance is construed as the negation of the final cause, whereas in its physical articulation, it is interpreted as the negation of the efficient cause of the universe. Given that this theory has posed significant epistemological and ontological challenges, the present study endeavors to analyze and evaluate it by employing a critical-analytical methodology and drawing upon library resources. In the epistemological dimension, the challenges pertaining to cognition, epistemic justification, and the possibility of logically explaining chance events are examined. Furthermore, from an ontological perspective, the role of chance in the explanation of existence, the constitution of the cosmic order, and its correlation with causality is elucidated. Research findings demonstrate that the chance hypothesis, from both epistemological and ontological standpoints, lacks the requisite validity to either prove or disprove the efficient and final causes. Furthermore, it encounters numerous challenges in elucidating the principle of causality.
