The tradition, “The similitude of my Household (Ahl al-Bayt) is like Noah’s Ark; whoever boards it is saved, and whoever stays behind is drowned,” famously known as the Safīna Hadith (Hadith of the Ark), is a universally agreed-upon tradition among Islamic theological schools. This hadith likens the Household of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) to Noah’s Ark, emphasizing that the path to salvation is exclusively restricted to following them. Consequently, disregarding them—much like ignoring Noah’s Ark—inevitably leads to misguidance and perdition. Zaydī scholars, in congruence with other Shīʿī schools of thought, have recorded this hadith in their sources, attested to the authenticity of its transmission chain (isnād), and underscored the necessity of adhering to the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as the leaders of the Ummah. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology and drawing upon primary sources, this article examines the authenticity of the hadith and its implications from the perspective of Zaydī scholars. An examination of Zaydī literature reveals that this school of thought, in contrast to Imāmī Shīʿism, relies on the traditions of other narrators, contingent upon their alignment with the Quran and intellect. Consequently, it presents a unique perspective that restricts the Ahl al-Bayt exclusively to the progeny (dhurriyya) of the Prophet (PBUH). This viewpoint places particular emphasis on theological tenets such as the obligation to love and obey the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), the exclusivity of guidance and salvation in following them, and the absolute necessity of the presence of an Imām in every age. By investigating the Safīna Hadith from the perspective of Zaydī scholars, this research not only deepens the comprehension of shared Islamic doctrines and fosters intra-faith solidarity, but also elucidates the under-explored dimensions of the Zaydī viewpoint regarding the station of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS). Ultimately, it provides a paradigm for comparative studies and constructive dialogue among Islamic schools of thought.
