The relationship between religion and power is one of the longstanding and contentious issues that has consistently attracted the attention of scholars in the philosophy of religion. Among contemporary voices, Abdolkarim Soroush has offered a particular interpretation of this relationship in a series of lectures, wherein he describes the language of Islam as a language of power and violence. He characterizes the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) as a power-seeking and authoritarian figure and considers the Qur'an, as the Prophet's speech and discourse, to be filled with indications of authoritarianism.
To support his claims, Soroush refers to a set of historical reports from the Prophet's life (sīrah), which, in his view, indicate a link between the Prophet and authoritarian conduct. This article adopts a critical-analytical approach to examine the narrative foundations of Soroush’s viewpoint. It argues that the hadith-based evidence he cites fails to meet the established criteria for historical validity. Furthermore, the article highlights the undeniable influence of political agendas during the caliphal era in promoting an authoritarian reading of the Prophet’s conduct. It also contends that Soroush's interpretation conflicts with Qur'anic verses and the authentic Prophetic sīrah, and ultimately lacks comprehensiveness and scholarly consistency
