Religion and its relationship to human nature have always been one of the most central topics of human thought. At the height of the Enlightenment, Jean-Jacques Rousseau presented a new formulation of this relationship in which religion is not an external institution or a set of imposed beliefs, but an internal, natural truth arising from the call of conscience. This research, with a descriptive-analytical approach and based on the analysis of Rousseau's main works and their authoritative interpretations, attempts to explain the anthropological foundations of this "natural religion" and its functions in the exaltation and degradation of man.The findings show that the most important foundations of Rousseau's natural religion are based on four anthropological foundations (love of nature, compassion, freedom, and conscience) and have at least five fundamental functions (defining human nature, explaining human purpose in life, liberation from self-alienation, explaining the factors of growth, and explaining the factors of degeneration), some of which are themselves divided into several principles; on the one hand, eight positive principles for human growth and on the other, nine negative warnings against the factors of decline. The conclusion of the research is that for Rousseau, natural religion is, beyond an abstract theology, an existential plan for restoring human dignity and moral freedom against the corrupting forces of modernity; a plan that seeks the path to salvation in returning to the call of conscience and reconnecting with the original human nature
