With the advent of modernity, the abandonment of traditional religiosity is increasingly framed as a rational and emancipatory choice—a stance that constitutes the prevailing conception of irreligion. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology rooted in the philosophy of religion and contemporary Islamic theology (kalām jadīd), this article posits that the concept of "absolute irreligion" is fundamentally an illusory construct. The human being is inherently oriented toward meaning, hope, value, and communion with a transcendent reality. Because the necessity for an ultimate meaning-system is innate and primordial (fiṭrī), any void in this existential realm is inevitably occupied by substitute frameworks characterized by implicit polytheism (shirk).
Drawing on Qur'anic typologies, this study categorizes religion into three fundamental paradigms: the Religion of Truth (Dīn al-Ḥaqq), the Religion of False Deities (Dīn al-Ṭāghūt), and the Religion of Servitude (Dīn al-ʿAbīd). Within this framework, modern ideologies—such as humanism, secularism, and liberalism—are critically analyzed as "surrogate religions." Findings reveal that these paradigms function either as the Religion of Ṭāghūt, driven by an anthropocentric teleology, or as the Religion of Servitude, defined by a hedonistic teleology. Consequently, they serve as the primary sources of the ontological and epistemological crises in the contemporary world. Ultimately, the article proposes a reformative-revivalist model to distinguish the Primordial Religion (Dīn al-Fiṭrah) from subservience to illegitimate or deficient religious substitutes.
