Abstract

With the advent of modernity, ecological crises stemming from anthropocentric interventions in the natural world have reached unprecedented severity. A number of scholars identify contemporary humanity’s fundamental worldview toward the cosmos as a primary catalyst of these crises. Furthermore, some critics attribute this destructive orientation to religious doctrines—specifically within monotheistic traditions and Islam—contending that religious tenets have actively fostered environmental degradation.
Conversely, a systems perspective on existence—as an essential prerequisite and strategic extension of the Islamic doctrine of the "Best Possible Order" (Niẓām al-Aḥsan)—holds profound potential to reform humanity's understanding of the universe and offer a constructive framework for mitigating ecological crises. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, this study examines the systems view of existence as a conceptual extension of belief in Niẓām al-Aḥsan and evaluates its capacity not only to contain environmental challenges but also to refute unsubstantiated allegations against Islam, drawing upon the Quranic and philosophical insights of ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī.
According to the findings, anchored in Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s metaphysical and exegetical framework, the cosmos across all its ontological levels and entities operates as a dynamic, interconnected system whose constituent parts act in complete harmony toward a defined teleological purpose. Adopting this conceptual framework yields transformative principles for human-environmental interaction, providing effective mechanisms for preventing, mitigating, and rectifying ecological degradation. Moreover, this perspective offers a philosophically robust, well-reasoned response to critics who mischaracterize Islamic teachings as the root cause of environmental harm.
