Abstract

The place of اعتبار (constructed normativity) in value judgments is one of the central issues in metaethics. The relationship between constructed value judgments in various theories and moral realism holds significant importance. This article aims to reinterpret the role of اعتبار in value judgments. Understanding the structure of values requires attention to at least four dimensions: (1) the system of human goals, (2) the traits and characteristics of the agent, (3) the realities that shape the context of action, and (4) the features of the action itself. We begin by describing four major perspectives: contractarianism, constructivism, Allameh Tabataba’i’s theory of اعتبار (iʿtibārīyāt), and Allameh Misbah’s account of اعتبار. Using a descriptive–analytical method, we identify at least five types of اعتبار in value judgments that serve as structural principles. All of these structural principles, along with the five stages of اعتبار‐making, can be examined, accepted, critiqued, or rejected within a realist framework of values. The five types of اعتبار are: (1) اعتبار related to the composition of real causes; (2) اعتبار of causality and effective connection; (3) اعتبار of relationality; (4) اعتبار of unifying symbols; and (5) composite and comprehensive اعتبار.
